Capability Dimension 2:
AI and Automation
Carriers operating at Level 4 have AI capabilities enabled in their platform to autodetect condition hazards and other risks from aerial and ground-level imagery, as well as from videos captured during inspections. They also have fully automated workflows that trigger underwriting actions based on the findings. The top carriers straight-through process more than 70% of their inspections and prioritize the remaining high-risk policies for underwriter review. Carriers in this top quadrant also leverage low-code, no-code capabilities to make quick changes to their underwriting guidelines and inspection ordering logic. Some of the top performers are also exploring in-platform Generative AI (Gen AI) capabilities in an R&D/limited production capacity to drive underwriter productivity by auto-detecting hazards, delivering quick Gen AI-generated risk assessment summaries for underwriters, and having Gen AI draft policyholder communications or action letters.
At the lower end of the spectrum, we see carriers still relying 100% on manual underwriter reviews with no workflow automation. As a result, they struggle with underwriting profitability, lower operational efficiencies, and are unable to compete with the top performers and their key competitors.
