An Unprecedented Year
Straight-line winds, damaging hail and destructive tornadoes primarily drove insured losses in the U.S. in 2023. Multiple single-digit, billion-dollar events, in the aggregate, generated an unprecedented amount of loss on par with a single major hurricane.
Hail caused the greatest percentage of insured loss. Hail, unlike tornadoes and straight-line winds, is both frequent, affects a huge part of the U.S. and can cause considerable damage.
The degree to which 2023 was an outlier compared to history is seen in the number of single- and multifamily residential properties affected by hail. Hail of at least one inch fell on over 10 million single- and multifamily homes in the contiguous U.S. from mid-March through November 2023. This estimate does not account for homes impacted multiple times. Over 50% of those homes were in Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma and Missouri (Figure 1).
Hail impact was not limited to the typical SCS season (late spring and summer). Figure 2 shows the daily count of residential properties impacted by one inch or greater sized hail. While the largest single days were in the earlier part of the year, there were multiple days throughout the summer and fall where one inch or greater hail impacted over 100,000 homes.
